On Sunday morning, May 17 we picked
up a diesel Audi A4 at the Avis office on the Gran Via, from which it
was a straight shot out of town to El Escorial. No interior
photos permitted at El Escorial. From there we went up to
Segovia, where we had lunch, then went west to Avila, where we checked
into the Parador.
The next day we went on to Salamanca, where
we spent most of the day. In 1985 we drove from Avila to
Salamanca, parked at a curb, and walked a couple of blocks to the
cathedral and university. In 2009 the whole town is choked with
traffic. We parked in an underground garage. The Plaza
Mayor of Salamanca is often cited as the most beautiful plaza in Spain.
When we were there it was full of partitions that had been set up
for some sort of celebration so I got no good photos.
Ciudad Rodrigo is a Spanish fortress city near the
Portuguese border and Almeida is a Portuguese fortress city near the
Spanish border. Both were the scene of battles in the Peninsular War
against Napoleon. We spent a night in the Parador in Ciudad Rodrigo,
then the next day went on to Almeida.
